Hatchet 3 (2013) is the third horror film in the Hatchet Series. It follows the continuing adventures of Victor Crowley and his murderous rampage through Honey Island Swamp in Louisiana. Kane Hodder portrays Victor Crowley while Brian Quinn plays Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanbilt plays Misty.
The practical effects in the film are the film's biggest strengths. In contrast to many contemporary horror films that rely heavily on CG effects, Hatchet 3 features mostly practical makeup effect and sets--resulting in some truly terrifying scenes throughout the movie.
Kane Hodder is a standout in the ensemble, and he's an intimidating (blog post) villain. The dialogue is hilarious and tongue-in cheek that it could feel like a classic '80s horror film. There are some really funny moments that offer an entertaining contrast to the heartbreaking action.
Unfortunately because of the small budget (reportedly just $1 million) many of the locations are repeats from previous films in the series. The identical boat house was used two times within the movie and a lot of the film appears to be a re-use from other films in this franchise. This can make it seem like it's all too familiar at times for those who have watched Hatchet or Hatchet 2
Overall, Hatchet 3 was enjoyable, even though it felt very similar in tone to previous entries within the series. It provided lots of thrilling thrills and some entertaining performances from the actors.
